Ms. Gina Curtis has been a teacher for 17 years, and 15 of those have been at Elk City. She is also the head high school tennis coach.

During the years 2008 and 2014, she was named the Elk City Junior High teacher of the year and earned the title of Region 4 Tennis Coach of the year for 2012, 2015 and 2019.

Growing up, she wanted to become either a photographer or an actress but has always liked school and loved to learn. Around the beginning of her high school career, Ms. Curtis had a job at Swartz Drug when she was fifteen. She also played three sports: softball, basketball and tennis, which resulted in no time for her job. Besides taking part in extracurricular activities, she also loved hanging out with her friends.

Her favorite high school memory was when there was a pep assembly on the day of her mother’s fortieth birthday. During the assembly, her sister got a wheelchair and made her mom sit in it as she wheeled her around the gym while the entire school sang her happy birthday.

While in college, she studied English education at Southwestern Oklahoma State University. During the time she spent earning her degree, she had many jobs but none of them compared to teaching.

Ms. Curtis currently works a second job during the weekends at the R&K Superette Convenience Store. She enjoys reading, watching Jennifer Lawrence on the big screen and wishes to have an otter as a pet. Ms. Curtis also loves Mexican food; especially shrimp creole. She hopes to travel to Europe and Australia someday. Although her name is Regina she goes by Gina, but many of her tennis players call her Curt.

“My favorite thing about teaching is the relationships I make with the students and the moment they ‘get it’ or understand something they are working on in class,” said Ms. Curtis. She calls it, the “lightbulb moment”.
