Coach Gina Curtis has been voted 2019 Coach of the Year for Region 4.

“We have a successful program, and I give credit to our players for that. They work hard every season and put in the effort that is required to be competitive at the state level every year. It is an honor to be recognized for a sport I love to coach. I do put in a lot of hours to help our kids progress and get better, but ultimately, it’s the players that push themselves to be the best. I’m proud of the program we have here and very thankful to receive this award,” said Curtis.

Coaches hold regular region meetings every year, and they nominate coaches from each sport in each class to be Coach of the Year. Region 4 encompasses the area west of Interstate 35 and south of Interstate 40.  Curtis also received the Coach of the Year honor in 2012 and 2015.

Coach Curtis has been teaching for 17 years, with 15 of those being at Elk City. She began coaching in 2006 and became the Head Tennis Coach in 2010. In addition to being the Head Tennis Coach, she teaches English at the high school.

“She pushes us to our limits, so we perform better than we expected ourselves to be,” said sophomore Gavin Olson. “She has been my coach for several years, and I’ve gotten a lot better thanks to her.”

Curtis develops positive relationships with her team by working with them on the court and going to team dinners hosted by various team parents throughout the season. The individual growth of each player is just as important to Coach Curtis as winning, and that seems to be working out for the team. They have been on the road to state every year, and this year doesn’t look like it will be any different.

“I have several new players this year on varsity, so I would say our very first tournament of the year is one of my favorite moments. I really got to know them on that trip. They are a great group of kids. I’m most proud of the mental toughness our players have displayed this season. They are really focusing on their game instead of their mistakes. That makes me happy,” said Curtis.
