Elk City High School Senior, Reagan Benton, has been chosen as an Academic All-State recipient. Of 535 nominees, Reagan was one of 100 nominees chosen to receive this honor.

Having an ACT score of 30 was one of the main qualifications for the award, and hers was 31. In addition, students had to write an essay and get two letters of recommendation to fulfill the requirements.

Benton learned of the selection at the beginning of March when her mother brought her the letter from the mail. “I was surprised. I didn’t think I would get it just because you don’t think you’ll get things like that. There were 535 applicants. I didn’t think I stood a chance,” said Benton.

Her father Mark, mother Abby and sister Maddie were all excited for her. Her mom told her she was sure she would get it all along.

The banquet will be held May 18 in Tulsa. Reagan will be attending with her parents along with a teacher of her choice. She chose to take Mr. Roger Shockey, her AP Chemistry teacher. “I have had Mr. Shockey since my sophomore year. He’s always been someone I can go to if I’m having problems. He’s a great teacher, and he’s taught me a lot, that’s for sure,” said Benton.

As an Academic All-State recipient, she will receive $1000 for her freshman year of college.
