Melissa Southard Chosen for All-State Basketball Team

Senior Melissa Southard will represent Elk City at the All-State games in June.

The Oklahoma Girls Basketball Coaches Association announced the rosters for this year’s All-State games.

Elk City senior, Melissa Southard was chosen to represent the Middle West Region.

For the selection process, the players could participate in two rounds of tryouts in Bethany and Newcastle.

“The first round was at Bethany, and we went and shot around for a while,” said Southard. “The second round was at Newcastle, and we were put into teams and scrimmaged. After the scrimmages, they told us all that we would be notified.”

Coach Tim Ellison, Southard’s Coach since seventh grade, was present at the tryouts.

“She showed she definitely belonged as an All-Stater,” said Coach Ellison. “She was definitely one of the best players on the floor.”

The official roster announcement came Friday night.

“I was so excited. That’s something that I’ve wanted to accomplish for a long time. I was so happy,” said Southard.

Southard isn’t alone in the celebration. Her family, friends and coaches have been there to support and celebrate with her.

“I’m excited. It’s a big honor for her. With the work ethic she has and the work she has put into the game, I think it’s well deserved,” said Ellison.

The games will be at Norman High School, Saturday, June 1, with the larger schools tipping off at 1 p.m. The middle and smaller schools will follow.
